Indian Ayurveda Clay - Purifying and Refining

Clay has been used from ancient times and Ayurveda has always used clays and clay masks for beauty and therapeutic use. Combining the clays and the oils or herbs have a profound therapeutic effect on the body, mind and spirit. Clays are rich in minerals that work in synergy to cleanse, tone and revitalise your skin and body. The sun-dried clays are extracted in a way whereby their active mineral content is retained. In the ancient science of Ayurveda the universe is made up of five basic elements (Panch Mahabhutas) which are Air, Space or Ether, Water, Fire and Earth. Man also is made up of these elements and therefore he is a microcosm of this vast macrocosm, the Universe. Clay represents the prithvi (earth) element, which is all about growth and structure on a cellular level in the human body. Combination of clay, oils, herbs and water gives a synergy of tissue repair, restructure and total rejuvenation and vitality of your skin and body. Clays being earth are of mineral origin and are rich in minerals such as silica, magnesium, potassium, calcium, iron and zinc.

The Indian Ayurveda clay is Pure, superfine clay from India, a variety of Bole Armeniac described as Sugandhi Mruktika (aromatic clay). Its use is advised in ancient Ayurveda texts and scriptures. Indian Ayurveda clay has a cooling, soothing effect and is valuable for its natural drawing powers and mineral richness. Use alone for purifying and refining face and body masks, poultices and compresses or blend with other clays, herbs and essential oils to make a wide range of refining and purifying skin care products. When used in facemask, traditional Indian Ayurveda clay leaves your skin glowing, vibrant and radiant.

Leave it on for 15 to 20 minutes until it dries and then wash it off. The oils of Neem, Turmeric and Sandalwood when combined with clay make excellent poultices. In one tablespoon of clay you need just one teaspoon of purified water and you can add up to 6 drops of essential oils. Apply a thick paste where required. In the elderly, clay with oils make ideal poultices and for young people with over active skin functions, the clay mask helps tremendously with the oils of Turmeric, Cypress, Sandalwood and Tulasi. This clay is very gentle and can be used on animals as a dry shampoo, like using talcum powder or with the oils in it. It can be used in nursing homes for the ailing as it helps to keep their skin fresh and glowing. This clay is wonderful on its own but with the oils, the results have been very positive. It not only tones, but exfoliates, revitalizes and conditions the skin. Clays are used for full body masks in spas these days. You can do it yourself at home.
