For our complete product list click here The definition of an essential oil is a highly volatile aromatic substance, steam distilled from a single botanical source. Leaves, flowers, roots nuts, seed, fruits, bark, twigs, wood are used in different plants and are either steam distilled or cold pressed, or more recently extracted, through the use of carbon dioxide. These are popularly known as CO2 extracts. Through this method, which is very expensive, you can extract more of the delicate trace elements, which do get destroyed through the steam process. Another method called Enfluerage involves a solvent to absorb the essential oil. Animal fat or Ghee absorbs the oil and then alcohol is used to separate it. Other chemical solvents like hexane are also used. This method is not so popular any more, but fragile flowers like the Jasmine, Rose, Tuberose and Mogra are extracted by this method. In India we have ancient techniques still in use for distilling the Attars. The fragile flowers of the Gul heena, Kewda and the stigmas of the saffron are steam distilled into Sandalwood. So Sandalwood is used as both a fixative and a solvent. Again in India you have to be careful where you buy your oils from, as you can land up with synthetic solvents and oils. An experienced Aromatherapist with a good sense of smell and touch can tell from the aroma and the energetics of the oil. These oils are seventy to a hundred times more concentrated than the plant itself. Almost all essential oils have anti viral, anti fungal, anti bacterial qualities to a greater or lesser degree, depending on their chemical constituents. We like to call them pro biotic or eubiotic which means cell promoters as they do not destroy the natural flora of the body. Because they are volatile by nature they must be stored away from heat and light in order to keep their molecules in tact. Therefore dark glass bottles are recommended. Only a percentage of plant life on the Planet contains aromatic oils. So they can be called the immune system of the planet. By applying these oils on the body we are enhancing our own immune system. The oils are the prana or the chi or the life force of the plant. We are synergising the prana or life force of these oils with our own prana thereby bringing in an expansion and clarity on a mental, emotional and a spiritual level. Essential oils are not to be used neat on the body. They should be blended in a cold pressed vegetable oil referred to as base or carrier oils. Other uses of essential oils are in vaporisers, compresses, baths, foot baths & mists.
